About

KFOI: Freedom of Information – Source of Inspiration
KFOI 90.9 fm, is a powerful new community radio station
coming online in fall, 2017. We’ll have studios in both Redding and Red Bluff and a protected broadcast region in the Sacramento Valley from the City of Shasta Lake through Redding andRed Bluff to Corning, and into the foothills reaching Shingletown and Manton. In all, we’ll reach 260,000 people where they live and work -- the largest region of any community radio station in the northstate with a strong clear signal you can tune in to from your car, home or office, and KFOI will be streamed online. We will provide the most interesting and engaging programs: national news analysis, local events, talk and public affairs shows combined with many genres of music and radio drama.

Our first Program Meeting in the new studio space in Redding California. Boy do we have work to do!

We’ll feature local talent, as well as nationally and internationally recognized shows such as Democracy Now and Thom Hartmann. In the Pacifica Tradition, we support grassroots community and democracy building in the hope of creating a better nation and world. Community Radio is funded by listeners and local underwriters.

This is your station. We are building relationships to bring you the stories of our communities; conversations with leaders, doers and people on the street along with artists, authors and musicians. And we’ll bring their work directly to you.

KFOI’s mission is to connect and empower local individuals and communities. This is more than lip service, we are designing strategies to do just that. KFOI is a new, exciting place for listeners to tune into the Northstate, engage their brains, shift some assumptions around, and put their beliefs in gear. And we’ll have quite a bit of fun along the way.

KFOI has secured $150,000 in funding to get on the air in our expanded region. We’ll need ongoing operating support from listeners. We are an all-volunteer station and expect to remain so in the near future. Our budget will be just $35,000 annually, a modest price for service to such a large region. The lion’s share of this budget is for utilities, broadcast tower lease and studio rent. We think this is a sustainable annual amount that will be generated from supporters throughout our large region.

Mission

Connecting, informing, engaging and increasing understanding to move the people of north central
California and their communities toward a more vibrant, respectful society and participatory democracy.

KFOI will be a strong, progressive voice creating opportunities for building common ground and connectivity within and between communities.

KFOI is Unique
The health of our democracy depends upon informed, engaged and active citizens – now more than ever.
KFOI is dedicated to raising the level of discourse, increasing respect and improving community engagement locally. We have designed active strategies to accomplish this. No other station in our region has dedicated significant airtime to serve this mission. We will also showcase our area’s culture and grow to become a trusted source for local news, events and commentary for all the communities in our region. Other local community and public radio stations mainly have content and community calendars covering some cultural events in a few cities. With the continued decrease in local content by the remaining area newspapers, their traditional as a public square is no longer functioning as a conduit for government agencies to communicate to the public about upcoming land use and resource hearings and forums. Unlike other local media, KFOI will have a consistent focus and ample time allocated for presentation of issues well in advance of hearings so the public has time to formulate effective responses. Along with locally produced music, theater and multiple community calendars organized by regions and categories; as a Pacifica affiliate, KFOI will also offer a high-quality selection of national commentary and cultural programming. KFOI will bring focus to our local region then outward: connecting us to each other, our community, our region and our world to strengthen the building blocks of democracy.

Sustainability
KFOI’s broadcast area encompasses a large economic base of potential underwriters, donors and volunteers. With two studios in the northern and southern part of our region, volunteers will have convenient access to meetings and to produce programming which will allow us to build a large volunteer base. Our budget is modest yet our station will impact four counties. With an experienced, all-volunteer operating team, our year-to-year fundraising goals are achievable. Our projected budget of $35,000 is in line with many other small community radio stations who operate in much less populated areas with muchsmaller economic bases.

KFOI will be flexible, evolving, and can explore and create many topic areas of local programming due to our longstanding relationships in the community and our excellent volunteers.  As a Pacifica Affiliate and a member of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters we will have the opportunity to share our local programming with other stations and download programs from other stations around the country.

History
Twenty-three years ago, citizens in Tehama County applied for a permit to construct a community radio station to serve Tehama County. Seventeen years later, the Federal Communications Commission, FCC, granted their application over other competitors. Three years later, in 2009,
KFOI 90.3 was on the air broadcasting to the city of Red Bluff then, with partners in the Redding area, successfully applied to expand our broadcast region to serve a 260,000-population area reaching from Tehama and Glenn through Shasta counties. In the following years, we have worked through all the laborious FCC processes in preparation to launch in fall of 2017. Alta California Community Media has assembled an experienced and enthusiastic management and operating team serving the largest community radio station in northern California: KFOI 90.9 fm
